Possible points of exploration according to your goals (I give space in our initial call to explore this with you to see what you are really in need of for mentoring):

• Exploration of your desires and goals as a farmer and blocks that come up for you along the way.

• Building a realistic vision of your farm business, including what you really need to get started (it’s less than you think).

• Infrastructure and scale: How to size your farm infrastructure and planting plan to fit your ideal farm scale/size.

• Efficient field layout design and field maps: Greenhouse, packing shed, equipment storage, well size, high tunnels, low tunnels, etc.

• What you need to build and when to get running.

• Crop rotation and fertility plan: Where to plant what and maps for reference during growing season.

• Develop a crop rotation and soil fertility plan in alignment with organic standards.

• Creating a seeding/planting plan and seed ordering: what to seed when and where? What to plant when and where? Plant spacing, cultural needs, etc.

• Cultivation and weeding maintenance plan: Set goals for general weed control, which is super important for organic farming.

• Pest and disease plan: What pests and diseases to expect and how to deal with them

• Irrigation set-up plan: Well size, supplies, how to set up and what types of irrigation recommended per crop.

• Harvesting plan and yield projections: What to expect to harvest and when in alignment with your goals.

• Post-harvest handling plan: How to harvest various crops. How to wash and hold various crops.

• Including perennial plant habitats into your farmscape (berms, gardens, windbreaks, etc).

• How to incorporate low- and no-till practices onto your farm.

• Labor/work plan and SOPs: Who is doing the work, when and how?

• Set up budget for the year, estimate cash flow (which can be a huge issue for farms) and what equipment to purchase.

• Record keeping: what records to keep, how to maintain them, how to prepare to use them to complete your taxes, and more.

• Marketing and pricing plan: Who are your selling to and how? How much to charge, etc.

• Organic certification set up: File paperwork, maintain records during season and go through initial inspection

• Year end reflections/how to improve: Important reflection for analyzing harvest records, what did well/didn’t do well, work to be better next season, etc.

• Calling your Land to you and listening to your Land

• Managing a work-life balance (especially if you have kids)

• Intentional farming practices: How to develop a relationship with the Land, and the plants and animals that live on it.
